Before using SMOWL CM, verify that your computer has the necessary requirements.

Technical requirements

  • Operating System: Ubuntu 18, Ubuntu 20, Debian 11

  • RAM: 2 Gb (4 Gb recommended)

  • Hard disk space: 250 Mb

Before the installation

You will find the download link for SMOWL CM within your platform, in the course you are taking.

Depending on your platform, this location may vary. If in doubt, consult your teaching staff; they will inform you where you can find it.

You can check within your course for your SMOWL tool. Below are some of the most common ways to find SMOWL CM.

In MOODLE or OpenLMS, it is most common to find a block similar to this within your course. If you do not find it, contact your institution.

In Blackboard, Canvas, or D2L, it is common to find a download button within the SMOWL tool. If you do not find it, contact your institution.

Installation Process

When installing SMOWL CM you have the option to install it either by the graphical interface (Installation using the graphical interface) or by using commands (Installation using Terminal commands).

Installation using Graphical Interface

Once you have downloaded the SMOWLCM installer, you need to run it manually by double-clicking on the file.

In case you can't find it in your browser, you will have to look for it in the "Downloads" folder, or wherever you have saved it.

If you double click, an installation window will open. There you will find the option to install SMOWL CM.

For security reasons, once you press install, your system may ask for user authentication. Once you enter the password, the installation process will begin.

Once the installation has finished, verify it by checking in your system (Review your installation)

Installation using Terminal Commands

In order to install SMOWL CM by commands, you will use the following commands:

sudo apt install <SCM.deb>

or

sudo dpkg -i <SCM.deb>

For example, if we execute from the directory where we have the executable:

sudo apt install ./SCM.deb

Once the installation has finished, verify it by checking in your system.

Review your Installation

Once the installation is complete, you will need to run the tool from the application panel. A window will inform you that SMOWL CM is installed and running correctly.

In case SMOWL CM is blocked by the antivirus, you must give it permission to run and/or add it to the antivirus exception list.

SMOWL CM

SMOWL CM system will run automatically when you start the activity to be monitored within your virtual campus and will only record your activity at that moment. Remember that everything that happens on your computer from the beginning to the end of the activity will be notified to the institution.

Test Evaluation

To confirm the correct functioning of the SMOWL CM application, ask your company, academic institution, university, or platform if a test exam has been enabled. We recommend taking this test exam before your actual exam or activity to ensure that the system has been installed and is working properly.
