Before the installation
You will find the download link for SMOWL CM within your platform, in the course you are taking.
Depending on your platform, this location may vary. If in doubt, consult your teaching staff; they will inform you where you can find it.
You can check within your course for your SMOWL tool. Below are some of the most common ways to find SMOWL CM.
In MOODLE or OpenLMS, it is most common to find a block similar to this within your course. If you do not find it, contact your institution. | In Blackboard, Canvas, or D2L, it is common to find a download button within the SMOWL tool. If you do not find it, contact your institution. |
Installation Process
When installing SMOWL CM you have the option to install it either by the graphical interface (Installation using the graphical interface) or by using commands (Installation using Terminal commands).
Installation using Graphical Interface
Once you have downloaded the SMOWLCM installer, you need to run it manually by double-clicking on the file.
In case you can't find it in your browser, you will have to look for it in the "Downloads" folder, or wherever you have saved it.
If you double click, an installation window will open. There you will find the option to install SMOWL CM.
For security reasons, once you press install, your system may ask for user authentication. Once you enter the password, the installation process will begin.
Once the installation has finished, verify it by checking in your system (Review your installation)
Installation using Terminal Commands
In order to install SMOWL CM by commands, you will use the following commands:
sudo apt install <SCM.deb> or sudo dpkg -i <SCM.deb> |
For example, if we execute from the directory where we have the executable:
sudo apt install ./SCM.deb |
Once the installation has finished, verify it by checking in your system.
Review your Installation
Once the installation is complete, you will need to run the tool from the application panel. A window will inform you that SMOWL CM is installed and running correctly.
In case SMOWL CM is blocked by the antivirus, you must give it permission to run and/or add it to the antivirus exception list. |
SMOWL CM
SMOWL CM system will run automatically when you start the activity to be monitored within your virtual campus and will only record your activity at that moment. Remember that everything that happens on your computer from the beginning to the end of the activity will be notified to the institution. |
Test Evaluation
To confirm the correct functioning of the SMOWL CM application, ask your company, academic institution, university, or platform if a test exam has been enabled. We recommend taking this test exam before your actual exam or activity to ensure that the system has been installed and is working properly.
SMOWL CM Auto-Update Process
Starting with version 5.0 of SMOWL CM, our computer monitoring tool, an auto-update process has been integrated into the software. This enables the automatic deployment of updates whenever a new version is available, ensuring that students have the latest version of the software when they access an exam.
Once the process is completed, the SMOWL CM tool will be re-launched on the student's device and the exam can be accessed normally.
The auto-update process has shown a problem.
It has been identified that the auto-update process may occasionally be impeded by factors beyond the control of SMOWL CM. In such instances, a message similar to the one displayed below will appear on the screen:
How to update SMOWL CM manually?
In case SMOWL CM fails to update, please follow the steps below:
Uninstall SMOWL CM from your computer.
A warning message will appear in the monitoring block indicating that SMOWL CM is not connected. Download and install the new version of SMOWL CM.
Once the installation is complete, refresh the exam page and check that everything is connected correctly.
How to prevent SMOWL CM from not updating itself?
Some antivirus prevent the correct functioning of the automatic update system incorporated in SMOWL CM. To prevent the antivirus from preventing this update, follow the steps below:
Access the antivirus panel and check that SMOWL CM nor its update function are being blocked.
Below you will find a short description of how to proceed with some of the main antivirus programs on the market:
Avast
1. Open Avast and go to “Menu” (upper right corner).
2. Select “Settings”.
3. In the menu on the left, go to “Protection” and select “Main Shields”.
4. Scroll down until you find “Exclusions”.
5. Click “Add file” or “Add folder”.
6. Locate the update.exe file or folder containing SMOWL CM and select it.
7. Save the changes

Windows defender
1. Open Windows Settings (Windows key + I).
2. Go to “Privacy and Security” → “Windows Security” → “Virus and Threat Protection”.
3. In the “Antivirus and threat protection settings” section, click “Manage settings”.
4. Find the “Exclusions” section and click “Add or remove exclusions”
5. Click “Add an exclusion” and select File or Folder.
6. Locate the SMOWL CM file or folder and add it.
Norton antivirus
1. Open Norton and go to “Settings”.
2. Select “Antivirus” → “Scanning and risks”.
3. Find the “Items to exclude from scanning” section and click “Configure”.
4. Click “Add folders” or “Add files” as needed.
5. Locate update.exe or the SMOWL CM folder and add it.
6. Save the changes.

Mcafee
1. Open McAfee and go to “Settings” → “Real-Time Scanning”.
2. Click “Exclusions” or “Add exclusions”.
3. Select the option to add a file or folder.
4. Locate the update.exe file or SMOWL CM folder and add it.
5. Save the changes.
Bitdefender
1. Open Bitdefender and go to “Protection”.
2. Select “Antivirus Settings”.
3. Find the “Exclusions” section and click “Manage exclusions”.
4. Click “Add exclusion” and select the type (file or folder).
5. Locate the SMOWL CM file or folder and add it.
6. Enable the option to exclude it from both on-access and scanning analysis.
